2. After receiving your AAU number please complete this free training

3. Important documents

  • Please download, sign and return the RI Magic contract to me via email rhodeislandmagic@gmail.com
This will need to be returned to me before you can participate in any Magic activities.

  • Please download and read the coach's code of conduct, which is mentioned in the contract (section 3.2).

4. Complete your coaching profile

  • All of our coaches have their profile on our website. Parents like to read about their child’s coach and their experiences and feel it is an important part of our website. Please write out the profile in paragraph format, not just bulleted dates and experiences. Don’t be afraid to brag! A great place to start is with playing experience and then moving onto coaching experience. Feel free to include education and career information as well. Here is an example of a coaching profile:

[Coach’s Name] began his basketball journey as a standout player at [High School Name], where he earned [number] All-Conference selections and led his team to [championships, playoff appearances, etc.]. He continued his playing career at [College/University Name], competing at the [Division level]. His passion for the game and deep understanding of team play set the foundation for his future in coaching.

Following his playing career, [Coach’s Name] transitioned to the sidelines, beginning as an assistant coach for [School/Program Name] before earning the role of head coach at [Team Name]. Over the years, he has coached at [youth/high school/AAU] levels, working with athletes from elementary age through college prospects. Known for his emphasis on fundamentals, discipline, and player development, he has helped guide multiple teams to [league titles, tournament championships, or notable achievements].

Off the court, [Coach’s Name] earned his [degree] in [field] from [University Name] and has built a career in [profession]. He lives in [town/city] with his [spouse/partner] and [number] children, and remains deeply involved in the community through youth sports programs and volunteer work. His philosophy blends a love for competition with a commitment to building character, ensuring his players grow both as athletes and as people.

  • Email your profile to me once it is completed. We will take your photo for the website at tryouts or your first practice.

5. Coaching attire

Send me the size and color of the dry-fit polos you would like, as I will purchase two for you. We have black, blue and blue/white combo. If you prefer to coach in something else other than a polo, I take coaches orders when the online store opens up at the beginning of the season and purchase any items you would like.

6. Read through each section of the coaching portion of the website

  • What is Magic Basketball and Core Values are extremely important and govern who we want to be as coaches with the Magic.

  • Sample Practice Schedule and Skill Practice Concepts will help you create your practice schedule and focus on the concepts that need to be taught each practice.

  • The remaining sections are designed to be resources to help you develop as a coach. Take the time to read through them, as some are specific plays, concepts and additional resources to help you grow as a coach.

  • Once you are a member of AAU, they have free coaching courses offered through the Positive Coaching Alliance. Please complete those courses as well.

7. Compensation

Head Coaches are paid $550 for the fall season, $750 for the spring season as long as they fulfill the commitment for the entire season. Assistant coaches are not paid, although a stipend may be given. For coaches that are coaching their child’s team- the tryout, season and uniform package fees are waived for that child in lieu of coaching payment.
