Fall 2024 Season Information

OVERVIEW

Our fall program begins the week of September 9th and will end the last weekend of October. We offer a boys' program for players in grades 2 through 12 and a girls' program for players in grades 5 through 12. Tryouts are open to all players of varying skill levels and playing experience.

PRACTICE

ALL teams will have multiple opportunities to practice weekly. Teams will have at least one team practice weekly for approximately 2 hours. In that team practice, coaches will focus on individual and team skill development. Coaches teach and reinforce the main basketball concepts, utilizing drills that build on each other throughout the season. Coaches will also spend time covering team concepts, preparing players and teams for their games.

ā€‹

Elementary teams will have one team practice and two additional skill development practices, which will incorporate stations to teach and reinforce basketball skills and concepts.

ā€‹

Middle School teams will have one team practice and two additional practices to improve their basketball skills and their physical strength and quickness as well.

ā€‹

Most high school teams will have two weekly practices and an additional opportunity to be in the gym as well.

Most, if not all, teams will practice at the West Warwick Civic Center, but we also use Johnston Indoor Complex and Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School. The day and times of practices are finalized approximately one week before the season begins.

ā€‹

TOURNAMENTS

Tournament play will begin for most teams the weekend of September 28th and 29th. We will play in 4 tournaments, all of which will be a 3-game minimum, and most, if not all, will have the opportunity to advance for an additional game(s). All tournaments will be local, with gym locations no more than 1 hour north of Providence. In addition, we only participate in larger, established tournaments with a proven track record of running well organized tournaments that focus on safety.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES

For players that are unable to commit to a full season of practices and tournaments or for players that we are unable to offer a spot on a team after tryouts, skills-only practices are a great option to help players develop their game. These are age-based workouts in which any player from 2nd-11th grade can participate. There will be approximately 7 practices and each practice will last 1 hour. Players will receive a RI Magic t-shirt.

ā€‹

At our skills practices, we teach the same 6 concepts each week, utilizing age and skill appropriate drills to teach those concepts. Drills are varied each week. The concepts that are taught every session are:

1.     Ball Handling

2.     Footwork/Offensive Moves

3.     Passing

4.     Player to Player defense

5.     Rebounding

6.     Shooting

Finally, our skills practices end with 3v3
s
o players can incorporate what we taught them
into a game situation.

ā€‹

FINANCES

The cost for the skills development practices is $135.
